[Point Look-out] merchant replacement for Tobar

Post by Laclongquan » Tue Jan 25, 2022 8:46 am

Tobar is the riverboat captain that carry us to plo and back. He also provide trade service on plo products in capital wasteland. But after he get eliminated in story main quest, Nadine doesnt provide trade access like he did. So we lose a plo merchant after plo completion.

A pretty heavy punishment in my book.

So i request a small modification in Adding trade function to nadine, utilizing tobar trade container. She shoukd start doing after returning to riverboat duchess.

How about it, people? You dont need to mess much with her dialog tree and just using existing trade container after all.

Since Nadine opens trading to the wasteland, unlike tobar, the dlc items have been integrated and some appear after completing the DLC to the rest of the wasteland in 3.3

That was story logic. I appreciated that, being a storyfag myself.

But gameplaywise, all that happen when we follow main quest is we get punished for completing it: losing a merchant.

We also gain free transportation to Point Lookout, which means we get free access to the PL traders (Madame Panada and Haley).
This might not seem like much, but each ticket would have costed 300-400 caps, since we would need 2 tickets to go to PL and back, it would cost 600 to 800 caps, which is around the caps Tobar would have for buying stuff. Also, IIRC, Panada is one of the merchants with higher amount of ammo available for trade (which I guess it's good for people who use ammo).

IIRC, Tobar is a food merchant, so he mostly only sells food consumables, which can be found in pretty much every other food merchant, only things he would sell that others wouldn't is Punga Fruit, but like Roy said, after the DLC, Capital Wasteland merchants will also sell PL stuff, and this includes Punga.

So in the end, we lose access to Tobar as a merchant with a low amount of caps, but we gain the ability to travel to PL for free and use the merchants there + being able to buy PL stuff on other CW merchants. In my humble opinion, it's quite worthy to finish PL and lose Tobar.

I will point out that if a player has to worry about a steenkeeng 800 caps hes a noob of noob and what is his business to play ttw anyway?

We are not dealing with f3 vanilla but a hardcore mod in fnv. As such, cater to such beginner would be asking for trouble.

Clarify: 800 = assault rifle + raider armor times 4. A visit to springvale or fairfax should get enough loot for tickets.

Clarify: actual prize for dealing with Tobar is his grifter fit and our brain matter. Its actually enough, because hes a weakass hostile anyway.

I will point out that not all players play the game the same way. 800 caps can be a lot for many players, specially at the start of the game. ;)

Also, by that analogy, what's the point in having Tobar as a merchant? Only thing he sells that other merchants in the CW don't is punga fruit, and all a player has to do is travel to PL once and get all the Punga Fruit they want for free anyway. Or going to merchants in the CW after killing him in 3.3.

Since Tobar only has around 800 caps for trade anyway, then what's the point in having or using Tobar as a merchant? We lose pretty much nothing by killing him. Specially since you say 800 caps is nothing. :D

How can we be punished by killing him when he's nothing to begin with? And we get so many "rewards" after he's gone. ;)

For argument purpose i will say this: Tobar is a big niche merchant because he sell one thing of note: yeast. Pretty steady source, compared to other shops. Any recipe use it would need him or a 2 month shopping trip to plo is called for.

Secondly he would be a logical place to go for punga if you want to limit punga supply in dc. So if we off him and widen supply to all dc but player meet nadine who bring the whole damn cargo to see no shop here... awkward, huh.

I never used Tobar as a merchant, so I never noticed the change.

One thing I do consider a bug: taking 30 days to make it to/from PLO. Seriously, did any of the devs every look at a map of Maryland? What is Tobar doing to take that long? Using a pole to push the boat along? I think I could do that in less than a month. I use a custom patch to change the price of the tickets and to make the trip last three to five days. Assuming there are one or two stops along the way, that makes much more sense. A month is a serious bug.

One reason i dont nitpick on the 1 month thing is:

Tobar is a merchant. Always has been for me. Which mean a trip down river is not a boat taking passenger. More like US hitch hiking on a boat transport punga to every communities from dc down to plo. So yes, of course it take a month.

Its a matter of perspective and utility. You guys look at Tobar as a captain carry passenger so its why~

Also it helps explain one more motive for his cracking open others head and taking trophy:

If you think of most other applicants to be tribal as some one targeting the secret of punga and the monoply to supply it to other markets, thus a dirext competitor to tobar. Of course he would break their heads.... pure capitalist behaviour~
