Is it possible to have the game be played "separately"?
To give some context to my question, I've been told the Fallout 3 modding community it mostly dead and I should get TTW. I've already started a game but I'm only 15 or so hours in.
Is it possible to start both games separately? I want to play Fallout 3 with New Vegas mechanics and mods, and when I finish Fallout 3 start a new playthrough in New Vegas.

You don't have to take the train if you don't want to. There isn't a mechanic to "end" the Fallout 3 side, but that's because Fallout 3 doesn't have one anyway with the Broken Steel DLC. Just stop playing and make a new character, or try the "Benny Humbles You" mod when you travel.

So I take it the "Benny Humbles You" mod basically resets my character?

There are two versions:
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/69842
https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/71112
The mod descriptions explain what they do.

Like Pinto says, all you have to do is play the FO3 side of TTW without ever taking the train to the New Vegas. Then you can just start a new game and pick to start in the Mojave Wasteland instead.
As long as you don't use the train in either wasteland, then you're pretty much playing each game on it's own.
If you never buy a train ticket, and don't grab the free one in the Capital Wasteland's station. Then you can't even use the train, so there's not much of a chance to accidentally travel (you also need to activate a switch inside the train to travel).

Is it possible? Yes it is.
Ttw default start in dc. You can finish dc then take the train to mojave anytime thanks to unlimited playing after broken steels. Note that the high level, high skill, high equipment make mojave a walk in the park.
If you choose to start in mojave, you can take the train back to dc anytime before second hoover dam battle. If want to do after, need a continue afyer ending type of mods, the which there are several with different ways to implement.
There are some common type of hostiles that mods in mojave can affect dc. Like creature mod, sm and ghouls. But f3 raider mod are not affecting fiends/viper / khan etc since they dont exist in each other land.
---
If you ask about playing f3 originally, since ttw demand mod organizer 2, you can easily set up an instance of f3 and play it separatedly from fnv without worry about interchanging mods.

Re: Is it possible to have the game be played "separately"?
Hello all, sorry for reviving an old thread I just had a question along these lines-- I'm picking Fallout back up after many years and I also plan on playing the two games "separately." Isn't the Capital Wasteland & leveling rebalanced with the assumption that you will continue on to the Mojave? Should i be worried about a lack of skill points etc? I'm still trying to get brushed back up on TTW so forgive any ignorance, thanks for your time

No, it's balanced to play like Fallout 3 but with some extras.
You can continue leveling as much as you want. You don't ever need to go to NV unless you want to for the unique items there.

And if you want to continue onto mojave, best leave most equipments behind or you will break mojave
