Conflicting plots of the two wastelands?

Post by Danest » Thu Jul 04, 2013 8:18 pm

Very interesting idea, this is -- haven't tried it yet because I don't have both fallouts installed at the moment.

But I'm wondering (maybe spoilers in the answer so I posted here) how are the very different plots of Fallout 3 and New Vegas handled, if it's addressed at all?  If I start in DC in the vault, and go west, suddenly I'm looking for a platinum chip now?  And if I start in Vegas and go to DC, do I suddenly get "born again" in a vault, or start looking for a dad that I wouldn't have met, having started in vegas?  It feels like the conflicting plots would cause all kinds of problems, for how can you have two completely different origins?  I suppose it can be "hand-waved" away, and just enjoy the two wastelands.

First off we are still only

First off we are still only in alpha, you have no choice but to start in Vault 101. There is a train station that will take you to NV where you see the NV intro, wake up in Doc Mitchell house, but skip quite a bit of the tutorial there. You can only change your name, face, and hair, but can't edit stats or sex. Also there is a nine year later screen, because we have changed the time line a bit. (We intend on filling in the nine year gap once we finish the mod and get out of alpha.)

The intent and goal of TTW is not to fix the plots to make them work together! That is what mods are for! Our only intent is to make FO3 work on the NV engine, use the cooler NV assets and game mechanics and give the player a way to switch between games with the same character.

You should really try the mod before making such wild assumptions! Also, look around the forums, spend some time in the chat, WE have some of the top FO modders here on a daily basis. We must be doing something right! yes

I would love to see someone come up with a plausible way of moving from New Vegas to Fallout 3 chronologically.

Post by JaxFirehart » Fri Jul 05, 2013 12:21 am

For now, the "lore" explanation is:

You were born in the Vault and escaped. At some point you stumbled on the train station, got a ticket and headed west. Unfortunately, the gunshot seen in the New Vegas intro has wiped your memory of almost everything that happened in the 9 years between getting on the train and getting shot.

A lot of people nitpick the train, saying how unrealistic it is to somehow have a track that goes 2000+ miles in the apocalypse. Remember though, that you have forgotten everything since getting on the train. For all we know, the train went 100 feet and died and you just kept walking. We deliberately didn't fill in that blank as it allows the player to create any backstory for what happened in those 9 years.

Retrograde amnesia - but then

Retrograde amnesia - but then this would leave out the beginning of Fallout 3 and growing up in the vault :)

I was asking out of curiosity to see what silliness people could come up with. Because most likely, there's no good way to go from New Vegas to being launched onto an operating table.

Yeah thermador created a mod that uses the amnesia card to go from NV to DC (which I promised I would update for 2.0 and incorporate in future versions, but didn't which means I'm like big oil sitting on patents).

Thermador had a letter delivered to you from dad, apparently sent when he was in Rivet City and first heard you were out of the vault. It assumes that you basically escaped and jumped straight on the train. The letter invited you to come back east and find him.

Another, very cool, idea was the "Inception" mod (which never panned out). Every time you slept in a wasteland, you woke up in the other wasteland as though you were dreaming about it. After beating the DC side you travel east and your dreams and waking hours finally sync up, after which you could travel back and forth freely.

Aliens and and their spaceship, like it or not, are part of the fallout lore.  ;)  I can't help but think that the mothership zeta would have been able to send the player to any number of places. Although the "nine years passing" is indeed probably pretty useful to explain how the DC player became a courier and got shot by Benny.

Yep, the mothership will eventually be able to teleport you to either wasteland.

At the moment, though, I am experiencing constant crashes on MZ and cannot figure out why.

So playing through all of DC

So playing through all of DC would be like living through a flashback.

Then you would be able to access your memory at any time? And what about continuity for your character's stats?

I would LOVE to see the inception mod actually working. I suspect that the idea for it is my one meaningful contribution to this whole project. If I had more time to learn how to script...
