If you spent all night finding the dll files, you could have wasted less time by reading the requirements for installing TTW in the Alpha Download page which says:
The installer requires Microsoft Visual C++ 2012 Redistributable SP1 (if your operating system is x64 (64-bit), make sure you install both the x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) versions).
If you don't already have Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable (download for x86 or x64) on your computer, you will need to install that as well.
Those dll files belong to these Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, if you had installed them then the files wouldn't be missing from your computer.
I am glad you managed to make work at the end, even if it took the long and hard way though.

I'm curious where he found them and if they're laden with viruses

Be sure to install BOTH the X86 and X64 versions of the redistributables. Only installing the X64 version isn't enough, even on 64-bit Windows.
