Megaton Home: All my stuff in the lockers is gone!!!

Post by rm978 » Thu Aug 27, 2020 7:46 pm

I keep awful lot of crafting materials, weapons&armor, collection quest items (pre-war books, chinese assault rifles, etc.) and any other stuff that would only take up my inv space, but still I want to keep. I put it all it 2 lockers on ground floor of megaton safe house.
Yesterday, I went to explore vault 92. I spent well over 1 and half an hour irl there to fully explore it, but when I fast travel back to my megaton home to stash all that hard earned loot in the lockers AND I FIND BOTH LOCKERS COMPLETELY EMPTY!! I then rage quitted the game and only launched it back today, still nothing is in the lockers. Fortunately I have a save before entering that vault and all my stuff is still in there.
From what I read on google, that glitch appears in base fallout 3 (fallout wiki's page on megaton house mentiones it) and nobody knows what exactly happens.
Is there any way I rescue my stuff and save myself an hour of going through this vault again?

You'll have to revert save, I have no idea what causes this bug.

Thanks for the response!
I did revert the save anyway, because I was bored as hell yesterday and I wasn't going to let a bug stop me.
One thing I forgot to mention in OP is: I leveled up while exploring that damn vault and took "pack rat" perk. Maybe this perk caused it?

No, I think it has to do with the encounter zone of the cell, I've had this bug too once or twice in 4000 hours. I've changed the encounter zone to one which never resets.

Can confirm this still happens on the most up to date version of TTW as of this post. It's a good thing I save profusely otherwise I would have been quite upset. I actually have a save inside the Megaton home that is 8 (real) minutes before a save right outside the front door of the Megaton home. The first save inside the Megaton home is fine and everything is as it should be even if I go out and back in. For the second save outside the front door of the Megaton home, if I go back inside then the cell is reset (it has the Vault theme so all of the shelves are stocked with food again and such) and the only containers that aren't [Empty] are the ground floor locker furthest from the front door and the nuka-cola machine, and the fridge (but the fridge has had its inventory reset to that of a standard fridge you find throughout the world, so basically empty). All of the rest of the containers are totally empty (Locker closest to door, upstairs room's Desk & Filing Cabinet).

The only things I did in the 8 minutes between these two saves inside the house is spawn in a few Mothership Zeta (and one other) items I didn't go on a murder spree for while doing the DLC (Samurai Armor/Hat/Sword, Paulson's Hat/Outfit/Gun), General Chase's Overcoat which I missed while doing the DLC and the O'Grady's Peacemaker unique police baton which I missed while revisiting Vault 101. I also spawned in the note that is found in the container with General Chase's Overcoat so I could read it (it added to pip-boy automatically as a note should).

I am not using any mods that alter the Megaton Home at all, in-fact my modlist is extremely short and is literally just stuff like MCM, CASM with MCM, Universal Item Sorter, Radios of Two Wastelands and TTW Tenpenny Tower Radio - nothing that impacts the Megaton Home or any worldspace or cell at all.

In all I lost like 30 minutes of play, but none of that stuff after leaving the Megaton Home was actually what caused it because the save file right outside the front door has the interior reset already. If I load the 8 minute older save and spawn in all those items again that I did before and go outside and back in there's no issue.

This issue is one reason why people should use a player house mod. Generally that kind of mods has things never reset so storage in those mods never get lost.

I use minihideout mod which set a player home base in springvale and never ever store anything in megaton at all. My home base, needless to say, overflow with stuffs.

I think for Mojave the Novac motel room, and later on Casino room, is safe.

That's a FO3 bug that has happened since FO3 was released. The cause and solution of it has proved elusive for all these years (that's why even unofficial patches haven't fixed it yet).
Since it was happening to some TTW users, the team's bug fixers decided to work on finding the cause of this ancient bug. IIRC, it was Roybatty who finally found the cause, and fixed it for the next TTW version.

And so, a 13 years old bug is finally squashed!
