Windows 7 / 10 : Which is preferred?

Post by Sarcasm » Tue Aug 06, 2019 3:40 am

I haven't played TTW in a few years, and my old install is on Windows 7. After watching GamePoets' install video, there were a few install and running problems listed for Windows 10 only. I don't remember exactly why my old install is on Win 7 since I've been using 10 for many years, but I vaguely remember lotds of crashes that didn't happen on 7.

Do the TTW mod authors have a recommendation on Windows 7 versus Windows 10 ? How is TTW handled differently between the two?

I'm surprised to see no answers, it seems an important question. Windows 7 and 10 handle admin permissions and file access differently which can impact how TTW works, or if it even works at all. Maybe a better question to ask is, is anyone running TTW on Windows 7 and if so, why not 10?

I run W10 on my laptop (because I HAVE to), and W7 on my desktop (because I can). I prefer W7, but W10 is okay as long as you don't use NVSR. NVSR kept breaking FONV/TTW on my laptop, which was damned irritating. Now there's Tick Fixer, so it's not as big an issue anymore.

Most people I know dual boot. I personally use 10 for work and games like Hitman, Total War Warhammer, and my Vive. I use 7 for anything older just because there are usually fewer hoops to jump through getting older games to run well on 7.

TTW runs on either so it really doesn't matter from that standpoint. As Jlf65 mentioned, NVTF does a fine job replacing NVSR on 10, so it doesn't really matter which you want to use for TTW.

Windows 10 does have ever so slightly better draw call performance, so you may gain a couple frames in intense scenes over Windows 7. Also, Windows 7 does not support hardware accelerated sound, so if you have a Creative sound card, ALchemy should increase performance as it will wrap DirectSound (runs on CPU) to OpenAL (hardware accelerated).

I've been using Win 7 for TTW and everything else for years with almost no problems (but I do have additional more up-to-date security software for firewall etc), I mostly play several years old games, some of my hardware is fairly old as well and I don't really see any valid reasons for an upgrade into Windows 10 so far.. If (big if) in the future I absolutely must have Win10 for something important, I'd likely go for a multiple OS boot selections kind of setup.

Mainly for me, it is a matter of trust. I do not trust the current era microsoft, not even a little bit.
