Laser Rifle vs Combat Rifle

Being both of these weapons are pretty similar in general performance it's a hard sell for me to choose which I want as a main combat side arm.  When I mean main combat, I mean something with a good supply of affordable ammunition but gives up a good return in performance.  Plasma is expensive for example, and fully auto weapons just guzzle ammunition too fast for my taste.

I go with long barrels, full stocks, and max damage upgrades possible for both of these weapons per shot with Red Dot sights for easier close range aiming.  Being I don't use "Full" scopes I don't use the stocks/barrels that help support sniper scopes either which improves hip fire accuracy as well.  But try to use ones that improve "Aim" accuracy.

Combat Rifle win with Max Damage and VATs Accuracy advantage. (but has to use .308 upgrade to beat Laser Rifle in Damage)

Laser Rifle wins with rate of fire, Better Aim and Hip Fire Accuracy.

Both seem to have the same range pretty much.  Laser Rifle seems more affordable to use... but man the VATs capability of the Combat Rifle is very good, I defended the USS Constitution using VATs from it's Deck down at people below and had a 80%+ torso success rate on most enemies.

I'm not an energy weapon fan

I'm not an energy weapon fan but I do like to get the unique laser weapon from Danse after finishing the ArcJet quest early on.  It's actually become my favorite because of what I consider the overall crumminess of the projectile weapons in this game.

I simply can't get enthused over any of the projectile weapons and only use any of them because they're the ONLY projectile weapons right now.  The bolt action weapons... I've said what I think about the left handed thing many times and the general design of the rest of them turn me off completely.  I hope Bethesda finds someone who knows a little about guns before they release the next chapter.

That and little things like a combat shotgun that's useless unless the bad guy's sitting in your lap or something.  An "assault rifle" that weighs like 15 pounds and looks like a WWI machine gun?  Yup, yup, yup.  ALWAYS wanted one of those.   The combat rifle (that looks like a cartoon version of a pump action shotgun) with suitable mods and the tactical 44 come closest to meeting my specs but I find myself using the laser rifle from Danse more and more while waiting for some decent guns to get made.

Deliver it is a beast in a

Deliver it is a beast in a small package.  Super high rate of fire, semi auto 10mm pistol, with insanely low VATs AP usage.   Let alone it's silencer sound effects are a throw back to Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. LOL

I found a Combat Rifle which gave all the same advantages as Danse's Laser Rifle.  I agree that the Bolt Action weapons are kind of bad.

Bethesda does seem to know absolutely nothing about fire arms.  I mean a .45cal Combat Rifle?  I mean a Combat Rifle with a magazine the size of a BAR firing 45auto rounds. *face palms*  It's Fallout 3 Hunting Rifle all over again.

There is a reason all Bethesda games are "Bad" in my opinion until modders get their hands on them when it comes to weapons, weapon designs, and at times even armor.   I thought everything Skyrim became ugly as heck after Iron Armor/weapons.  Fallout 3 the only weapons I liked the looks of were the "Real" weapons, not the fictional ones.  Though the Assautl Rifle on Fallout 3 was nice, being it was a G3 pretty much. lol

I mostly just use Big Boy

I mostly just use Big Boy with MIRV upgrade.

Nah just sometimes, I mostly go melee (Strenght 10). Championship baseball bat upgraded with Aluminium and Blade. Or the Super Sledge. Having the Little League Perk on max too.

Projectile Weapons is difficult to say. I actually dont use any.

Energy weapons I like Danses Laser Rifle. I fully upgraded it and then it has 90 Damage or so. Oh and the Alien Gun! ;)

But yeah, 90 Percent I go with Melee weapons and Power Armor Super Slam. Having a Mark 6 X-01 armor fully upgraded with Jetpack and Slam Perk Rank 3. Titanium "paint". And the core saver perk on Level 3. Just rushing through with my Power Armor now while stomping on the ground and using my baseball bat. Nothing is really a challenge anymore. Whether thats good or not lol. But its incredibly fun.

My favorite weapon by far (so far) is the Overseer's Guardian - modded it has 186 damage.

I've just modded the Gauss Rifle and it has a whopping 397 damage - but I haven't actually fired a single shot with it yet.

Wait you guys define your

Wait you guys define your favorite weapons by the damage they inflict?

In all games I play I define it for the looks, the feeling when using it and how much fun it gives me to bash enemies with it, for example once in TTW I only used Chuck's Killer carrot weapon which has the same stats as a unmodded baseball bat and we can't add mods to it and that was my favorite weapon ever!

I haven't played FO4 yet and so I can't say which I prefer, but I will have a feeling i will use mainly melee (I always play melee) so I can't say if I will prefer the Laser Rifle or the Combat Rifle... I will make an entire playthrough only wearing Grognak Armor and Grognak Axe, because I will play FO4 while I roleplay the way I want it or I will die trying!!!!

Not only damage, but I'd say

Not only damage, but I'd say that damage is important, especially in a game with so spongy enemies. It's not so fun to have to fire 25 bullets to take down a single enemy (or even more, I've taken out Super Mutants on lower levels with weak sniper weapons - it can take half an hour and 500 bullets to take out a gang). But I go for looks and "feel" as well. For example, I don't use hitech mods on ordinary weapons, as it looks corny, even if they are "better". Also, I always love a silenced 10mm and a good shotgun (Le Fusil Terribles in Fallout 4).

I almost never use heavy weapons as all my chars are sneaky ones with light armor (armor is another thing where I go for looks rather than DR BTW).

I'd love to find a legendary sniper weapon that does double damage when the enemy is at 100% health. Sounds awesome.

I have a legendary laser rifle that does double damage when the target is at 100%. It's pretty wicked. I use it about half the time. There isn't a lot that can stand up to it from range.

When I'm not hidden I generally use a combat shotgun with explosive shells I have dubbed "The Comb."

I have a Neverending Pipe Rifle somewhere that was fun to use as it never needed to be reloaded but the thing was so weak in terms of damage it was only effective against radroaches.

Thing I noticed when I picked

Thing I noticed when I picked up the Overseer's Guardian is it's inaccurate as heck.  Negating the most positive aspect of the Combat Rifle which is it's range and accuracy.... Combat rifle being good both inside and outside of VATs, while still functioning as a good long/medium/close range weapon.   Issue is the Overseer's Guardian is horrible after about a medium distance, then it becomes less effective than a normal combat rifle and can even miss shots at medium range because of the RNG of it's shotgun like effect.   It has a pretty painful accuracy nerf to get that two projectile capability, pretty much a long range shotgun that fires two projectiles in the end.   It seems to be better as a fully auto weapon really than a semi auto weapon, being it can spam out projectiles up the wazoo.

That being said, I've personally still not found a weapon more versatile than just a basic Laser Rifle.   I want to love the Combat Rifle because of it's BAR like appearance but the crappy noticeable welds, and cheap construction on the "Model" of the weapon itself is a huge turn off... that and ammunition for laser weapons is abundant.

Well, that's what modding

Well, that's what modding weapons is for. Almost never use VATS so no idea about how Overseer's Guardian works with it. And I don't check stats much either as I find it a bit boring, so haven't compared it side by side with anything else, but it's amazing for short/medium distances from the start. You basically get double damage with it for free - cuts through Deathclaws and anything like butter. And modded, it's basically the only weapon I need - better than Reba II as a sniper as well.

I actually cant think of a more OP weapon in 3 or new vegas...
