Double Barrel Shotgun Slightly Overpowered

Even though I love the double barrel shotgun, it seems to be a bit overpowered. This is more noticeable when in late game and even then, other shotguns don't output as much damage when they crit. When it crits, the crit damage seems to be outrageous mostly because it does a lot of damage against enemies (and you if they enemy is using the weapon) with or without armor. It can even kill hellfire enclave soldiers. Granted, it does take a few shots to kill them but still, it's a bit too much crit damage. This especially happens when you have better criticals, 10 luck, and finesse. It just needs a slight nerf so it can compete with the riot shotgun or hunting shotgun.

IIRC part of the reasoning

IIRC part of the reasoning behind the higher shot damage is with only 2 shells its DPS is quite a bit lower than the hunting or riot shotguns. Personally I don't use the double barrel due to this aspect as well as passing on the unique sawed off's as well. Personal preferences and all. But I've noticed on most guns with slow fire rates or small clips they "tend" to do more per shot damage. You can nerf these yourself in FNVedit with the double barrel and just change the base damage to something you feel is more appropriate.

If life is but a test, where's the damn answer key?!?!?

Well, if you make a character

Well, if you make a character to abuse criticals, of course it will abuse criticals when using weapons that have a high critical damage and have a bonus to critical chance % multiplier .

That weapon was already OP in Fallout 3, if you compare it to any other shotgun in the game, it is the highest damage shotgun.

For example, in FO3 the stats for the other shotguns are:

  • Sawed Off shotgun- 50 DAM, 112 DPS, x0 CC%M, 0 CDMG, 7 SPR
  • Kneecapper          - 75 DAM, 140 DPS, x0 CC%M, 0 CDMG, 4 SPR
  • Combat Shotgun   - 55 DAM, 82 DPSx1 CC%M, 27 CDMG, 3 SPR
  • Terrible Shotgun   - 80 DAM, 120 DPS, x1 CC%M, 40 CDMG, 6 SPR
  • Double Barrel       - 85 DAM, 191 DPS, x1 CC%M, 30 CDMG, 5 SPR
  1. DAM = Damage per Shot
  2. DPS = Damage per Second
  3. CC%M = Critical Chance % Modifier
  4. CDMG = Critical Damage
  5. SPR = Spread

So the Double Barrel shotgun has the best base Damage per shot, the best Damage per second, it's tied with the best Critical Chance % modifier, has the second best Critical Damage modifer and has the third best Spread out of the 5 different shotguns in the game. It is ridiculous how powerful it is, specially if you make a critical focused character .

Combined with how shotguns work (each shoot 9 bullets and each can cause a critical) those criticals get totally devastating.

But the double barrel shotgun does have drawbacks, it shoots two shells at once (consumes ammo twice as fast as other shotguns), has to be reloaded after each shot, because of that it will break much faster and has increased chance of "jamming" (because it breaks faster and you reload after each shot).

Weapons were balanced for TTW 3.0 though, but I don't know how that particular one was balanced .

I remember there was a

I remember there was a godsend moment in F3, when playing Wanderers Edition mod, when one would find the Widow Maker double-barreled shotgun. Unlike the other double-barreled shotguns, which had two shots before reload, Widow Maker shot two pallets at a time and had a knockback chance, which saved me from many a Deathclaw

Just a quick request here, please add an option for the weapon to have an ammo use of 2. It just gives me the super shotgun feeling if you get what I mean.

Pa's Fishin Aid is a Point

Pa's Fishin Aid is a Point Lookout Weapon, and a couple of PL mods add it back into the game (I love Point Lookout Reborn). Any time I go to PL, I make sure to pick it up as it's THE shotgun to get for shotgun enthusiasts. I generally use Pa's Fishin Aid for one-on-one encounters, and the riot shotgun for group encounters. In general, the double barrel shotgun is too slow for packs of animals/raiders/ghouls/mutants. Unless you've got really good armor, you'll take debilitating hits during the reload. If your armor is good enough to shrug off the hits while reloading, then the weapon hardly matters at all - just use whatever weapon you like most.
