Adopt Bryan Wilks

This is a re-creation of pintocat's original mod: http://fallout3.nexusmods.com/mods/12936/

 

You can adopt Bryan after agreeing to find him a home. Adopting him completes MS04, so you won't be able to shuffle him off elsewhere afterward. I don't think you can adopt him after taking him to Little Lamplight or Rivet City, but I didn't test this. Adopting him counts as a "good" ending to the quest, so you shouldn't get berated by Three-Dog over the airwaves.

His default weapons are his custom-textured baseball bat and the custom-textured dart gun. The dart gun is pretty weak, but it causes paralysis on critical hits. He will prefer almost any other ranged weapon, of course.

Upon adopting Bryan, the "These!" quest begins and you are granted a perk that counts ant kills. Every 10 kills, his confidence gets boosted. At 50 kills he gains the Trial by Fire companion perk, which grants your party (yourself and all followers) immunity to fire.

Bryan obeys the vanilla New Vegas limitations on followers: He will not join you if you already have a humanoid follower (as best as the VNPCFollowers quest variables can determine).

You can have him wear his backpack or not through dialogue, and you can have him open it as a second storage container. If you pick up his suitcase from at the foot his bed in his house in Grayditch, you can drop it anywhere and then have him travel to empty his backpack into it.

You can set up to two player homes to fire him to--one in DC and one in the Mojave. If you have not set a home in DC, he is fired to his Grayditch house. If you haven't set a home in the Mojave, he is fired to the Prospector Saloon in Goodsprings.

1.1 Update: Fixed the top-level flag on the hiring topic, fixed a script reference error thrown by the GECK.

I'm not sure if it's just my

I'm not sure if it's just my mods, but I didn't get a dialog option to adopt him. After agreeing the only options I had were to inquire about where to find a new home and giving up on finding him a home. If it helps I didn't kill the ant queen and got the perception ant perk from the quest. I even tried putting it at the bottom of my load order. Checked it out in FNVedit and there did not seem to be any conflicts. I'm not sure if I did something wrong but I followed the instructions on the original mod page word for word. I even tried finishing the quest and then trying to "hire" him. If you need any more info I'll be happy to supply.

Uh-oh, it looks like I forgot to set the top-level flag on the player-adoption topic. That makes me wonder why it worked in my tests, though...

The other conditions for the topic appearing are that you don't already have a humanoid follower in your party (VNPCFollowers.bHumanoidInParty = 0), haven't agreed to sell him to Eulogy, and the MS04 quest is at stage 60.

I'll fix the top-level flag and post and update.

Hey, a few bugs to report,

Hey, a few bugs to report, again with brian last in my load order. No conflicts in FNVedit.

-Brian flees during combat, always.

-Brian's unique weapons are not present, I went through every dialog option and all that was there was the dialog for his backpack (just open, not turn around, etc).

-As stated above, there is no option for him to go to his suitcase, for him to switch unique weapons.

He should stop fleeing after you find and kill 10 ants with him in your party. If you come across some ants that are not in the 'AntFaction' faction, killing them will not count toward this total. Detecting ants outside of the faction would require NVSE functions, the use of which I avoided in the spirit of the original mod.

His default weapons should appear in his inventory as soon as he is hired. They are flagged as unplayable, but dumping his inventory to the console using the ShowInventory command should show them there. If not, we have a problem. There are no dialogue options to enable or disable them; they are handled just like the vanilla FNV companions' default weapons.

The option to dump items into his suitcase won't appear unless you've picked it up from near his bed in his Grayditch house and then dropped it somewhere, as the flags that enable the topic and AI package are enabled when it is dropped and disabled when it is picked up.  I didn't want players to send him on a suitcase run and not know where he was stashing their valuables, so I added the requirement that you deliberately set a location for it. I'll run some additional tests to see if I can break this.

 

The main quest script contains NVSE functions that add support for Jazz's Companions Command and Control in a code section that should never execute if you're not using NVSE. If you aren't, we can assume that execution is going to this section anyway and crashing the script based on the issues you're having. If that's the case, I'll implement a work-around.

Ah, ok a lot of questions

Ah, ok a lot of questions answered. Thanks! I am able to report, however, that his default weapons were not delivered to him. I did an inventory dump to the console and he only had what I gave him (give or take his default clothing of course). Whether or not this is some kind of conflict on my save is beyond me but I would take a second look at it to be sure.

EDIT: I don't know the conditions for starting it, but also the THESE! quest has yet to appear in my log.

I would like to mention here

I would like to mention here that when I integrated FO3 companions into NV, I enabled donating them. The comments are even appropriate. He mentions Jericho as being "gamey" and replies with "You must be joking" for RL3 and Dogmeat. So it is possible to do AND have dialog.

He checks for if you have a humanoid follower. There's no dialog to indicate this, you just don't see the hire dialog. You can fire someone, or change the variable in the quest. JIPCCC unlimited followers option in MCM will also set the humanoid hired flag to 0.
